Background-
The King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) has strengthened Saudi Arabia’s voice in global energy talks through its role as National Partner at the 25th WPC Energy Congress in Riyadh.
KAPSARC president Fahad Alajlan urged leaders to balance energy security with sustainability, keep investing in oil and gas, and choose economically viable ways to cut emissions. He spoke at the third Symposium on Pathways to Reduce Carbon Emissions in the Petroleum Downstream Industries, which the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries organized on the Congress sidelines.
Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman and Industry and Mineral Resources Minister Bandar Alkhorayef recognized the center for its national partner role. KAPSARC also served as host partner of the Energy Hackathon, which the Ministry of Energy organized to spark innovation.
The center won two Best Paper Awards. A research team including Olivier Durand-Lasserve earned one for work on petrochemicals in the energy transition, and Aayushi Awasthy received the other for research on carbon finance for clean cooking in Africa.
More than 20 KAPSARC experts led or joined 18 sessions across the Congress’s four main programs. Alajlan told a panel that Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in spare oil production capacity, which gives the global economy strong value in uncertain times.
KAPSARC also led a Knowledge Sprint on generative AI in oil market analysis and a World Cafe session on carbon dioxide removal. It backed the SMART CDR 2.0 Competition as Platinum Sponsor for a second straight year, while its pavilion drew policymakers, industry leaders and international delegations.
