Background-
Arab bankers, financial institutions and investors have gathered in Amman for a two-day conference on supporting investment and development in Syria.
The Union of Arab Banks organised the event under the theme “Arab Economic and Banking Partnership to Support Development and Investment in Syria.” Officials from the Central Bank of Syria, Syrian private banks and Arab financial institutions are attending.
Central Bank of Syria Governor Mohammad Safwat Raslan called the meeting a chance to strengthen Arab banking ties and back reconstruction work in his country.
Participants will discuss how to fund development projects, improve the banking environment and expand digital services. They will also look at governance, risk management and anti-money laundering rules, as well as trade services and money transfers. Organisers aim to produce a roadmap for Arab-Syrian banking cooperation.
Investment sessions will cover industry, energy, agriculture, tourism and infrastructure. Speakers will also examine reforms, private-sector roles and ways to rebuild banking links with Arab and international partners.
Central Bank of Jordan Governor Adel al-Sharkas said Syria’s recovery matters directly to Jordan because of shared economic interests and close ties. He said a stronger Syrian economy could revive trade, transport and transit across the region.
Al-Sharkas said Jordanian banks have the experience and networks to help. He named trade finance, payment channels, transfers, supervision and digital services as areas for expansion. He said Jordan hopes the cooperation will grow into a wider Arab banking partnership.
