The current age of the industrial workforce and business’s human resource management has been transformed and empowered by some of the most innovative people leaders excelling globally. Amidst this league, Charli Harper shines like a starlet. She has become a HR Director EMEA at Tradition, a global interdealer brokering arm of Compagnie Financière Tradition and one of the world’s largest interdealer brokers in over-the-counter financial and commodity related products.
When people look at her successful leadership role today, they often assume that Charli might have followed a carefully planned career path. “I didn’t,” she assures with a smile. Attending a world-famous performing arts school, Charli’s journey didn’t begin with ambition for HR. Still, with a need to take responsibility early, a change of direction, adapt quickly, and lead people in environments where pressure was constant, and margin for error was small.
The success, too, wasn’t overnight. It was an advanced step-by-step process due to her constant, compassionate efforts that helped others feel valued and cared for in all her toughest and most challenging situations.
Slowly but surely, Charli worked her way up in the world of HR through sheer hard work and determination, becoming Head of HR for a retail group at the age of 22, a feat in itself, and not attending university until she was in her 30’s, “Whereas a full time working mum I achieved an under graduate degree and Masters in two years,” she shares.
From Hospitality to the C-Suite
Today, Charli has redefined what it means to lead in the global financial sector. Her journey is one of unconventional roots, academic grit, and a deep-seated belief that the ‘human’ in Human Resources is the most powerful asset a company possesses.
Before the polished boardrooms of Compagnie Financière Tradition, there were the bustling, high-pressure floors of the hospitality industry. This was Charli’s first true classroom of leadership. A world where theories were replaced by the kinetic energy of managing teams, de-escalating conflicts, and responding to the unpredictable in real-time. It was here that she discovered a truth that would become the North Star of her executive career.
The Kinetic Classroom of Leadership
Instead of textbooks, Charli learned about culture by watching how people behaved when the lights were bright and the stakes were high. She realized early on that an organization’s soul isn’t found in its mission statement, but in the micro-interactions of its people.
“I learned leadership long before I learned HR,” she reflects. “In hospitality, handling conflict and real-time challenges taught me something fundamental: culture is not what you say. It’s what people experience every day.”
When she finally transitioned into the formal world of Human Resources, she brought this ‘boots-on-the-ground’ wisdom with her. Charli recognized the importance of developing a people strategy to drive business success and value by building resilience and trust; whereas others (who viewed this as simply compliance) helped develop a tool for achieving it.
Earning a Seat at the Table
The year 2005 marked the beginning of a new chapter in Charli’s life as she joined the fast-paced, regulated world of Inter Dealer Brokers (IDB) at Tradition.” It was an exciting and challenging environment, one that required Charli to demonstrate her unique strengths as both a young leader from an artistic background and those required to navigate through this complex and highly competitive environment.
In this arena, Charli knew that titles were secondary to results. She leaned into the challenge, understanding that in a merit-based world, her voice would only carry weight if it was backed by unwavering performance.
“In the world of IDB, relationship skills are magnified to a higher level and credibility has to be earned,” Charli explains. “Operating in a fast-moving, merit-based, and relationship-focused environment suited my leadership style and personal drive.”
A Two-Decade Legacy of Resilience
In a world of constant job changes, Charli’s commitment to Tradition has lasted 20 years due to this single principle: sustained commitment. Charli believes Tradition’s values strongly reflect her own. She feels like she has found a home at Tradition where effort and resilience are paramount and allows her to combine the hard metrics of performance with the soft art of building long-term relationships.
For Charli, the long road has always produced the greatest rewards. Her motivation continues to be an unwavering belief that creating meaningful change is not accomplished by sprinting, but rather through showing up every day and continuing to show the same level of compassion and determination as when she started. “I have remained with them because of their high value for effort, resilience, and creating meaningful change through sustained commitment.”
Beyond the Support Function: HR as a Power Center
Perhaps the most radical aspect of Charli’s leadership was her driving HR to the front. In an industry like IDB, where the focus is often laser-fixed on the next trade or the bottom line, Charli chose a different path. She decided to treat HR as a strategic discipline, a core driver of the business’s very soul.
“The most defining decision of my career was committing fully to HR as a strategic discipline rather than treating it as a support function,” she says. “That choice, to operate as a business leader first and an HR specialist second, defined my leadership trajectory.”
The Crucible of the Pandemic
If the early days of Charli’s career were a lesson in earning credibility, the COVID-19 pandemic was the ultimate test of her resilience. In an industry where the trading floor is a high-octane sanctuary of physical presence, the world suddenly went quiet. As CHRO, Charli found herself as the anchor in a storm of an unprecedented situation. It was a time when the margin for error wasn’t just small. It was non-existent.
“The most testing leadership period of my career came during the pandemic,” she recalls. “HR was relied upon as a central source of stability, making decisions that really could affect both the company and people’s lives. It reinforced my belief that clarity, honesty, and empathy are not ‘soft skills;’ they are leadership essentials.”
While others focused solely on the mechanics of remote work, Charli focused on the human psyche. She helped steered the global giant through the uncertainty with a focus on mental health. Since reopening the world, Charli has transformed the workplace culture and evolved it into an integrated system, which includes hybrid work, where it was previously thought impossible.
A Global Symphony of Leadership
Charli has created a global symphony of leadership by leading culture across many regions, using more than just strategic oversight; cultural unity is key.
When leading cultures from regulatory hubs in Europe to operational areas in the Middle East, managing a global team became an art form in how Charli chose to listen, rather than speak. Charli understands leadership needs more than just volume; leaders must also be able to “fine-tune” their voices for different cultures around the world. “My experience leading global teams has shown me the value of being culturally aware, practising patience, and listening first before acting,” she explains. “Leadership maturity means using your established values, but being adaptable as a leader by applying global standards and considering the unique context in which you are leading.”
The Seeds of a Starlet
Charli saw the seeds of her success long before she held a C-suite title. The characteristics that make her who she is today — commercially savvy, people-focused, and rock-solid — were also what guided her through both the hospitality industry and university study while being a full-time mother.
Charli has always had a unique perspective on business. To her, it is a living entity that requires an imaginative approach to grow and a caring approach to support. “Having the ability to understand a business’s needs, support and promote growth with its employees, and remain resilient under pressure wins in any industry,” Charli adds, remaining an enlightenment of the idea that a career doesn’t have to be linear to be legendary. From the performing arts to the pinnacle of global finance, her journey proves that when you lead with empathy and act with commercial precision, you don’t just manage a workforce; you inspire a global community.
From Results to Legacy: The Evolution of Success
In her early twenties, when she was already heading HR for a retail group, success was a high-octane pursuit of delivery and impact. But for the woman who conquered a Master’s degree while raising a child and navigating a male-dominated industry, the definition of ‘winning’ has undergone a profound transformation. Today, success is measured not by the results of the quarter but by the strength of the foundation she leaves behind. “Earlier in my career, success was associated with achieving outcomes. Today, it is about building sustainable organisations and developing future leaders. It means having the courage to challenge when necessary and the humility to listen when others bring greater insight.”
The Currency of Executive Trust
In the high-stakes world of interdealer broking, Charli learned that the most powerful tool a leader possesses is not a perfect record, but an honest one. She moved away from the comfort of seeking consensus, leaning instead into the weight of accountability.
“At the executive level, influence is built through sound judgement and the ability to anticipate challenges before they arise,” Charli observes. “I learned that trust is not established through perfection, but through honesty, acknowledging uncertainty, and admitting mistakes. Following through on promises builds a credibility that hierarchy alone can never provide.”
Resilience as Adaptability
If there is one thread that binds Charli’s diverse chapters together, from the hospitality floor to the C-suite, it is resilience. But to Charli, resilience is not a passive act of endurance. It is an active, kinetic state of adaptability. It is the ability to absorb the immense pressure of the financial world, recalibrate in the face of crisis, and move forward with absolute clarity. “That resilience was forged early, shaped by non-linear progression, academic challenges, and operating in demanding environments. It has allowed me to navigate complexity without losing sight of purpose.”
A Message to the Younger Self
If the Charli of today could step back in time to meet the young woman starting her journey, she wouldn’t offer a map. Instead, she would offer an anchor. She would tell her that leadership is not a destination where one finally has all the answers, but a commitment to never stop asking the right questions. “I would also tell my younger self that setbacks are not signs of failure but signals for growth. Long-term success is built through consistency, integrity, and courage. Most importantly, I would tell her to trust her instincts. Because they were forged through experience long before any title ever confirmed them.”
Charli Harper continues her journey with a gaze fixed firmly on the future. She remains an inspirational leader for the modern workforce, proving that when you combine the grit of a working mother with the strategic mind of a business leader, you don’t just reach the top. You redefine what it means to be there.
