Background- 

 Oman’s space technology startup Oman Lens has won a bronze award at the UN’s Good Technology event in Geneva, a proud milestone for the Sultanate’s growing technology sector.

The Oman News Agency reported that the startup earned the recognition for its role in a project called “Eradicating Hunger,” which studied crops using space data to support food security.

Organisers presented the award during the UN Global Dialogue on Technology Governance, an event that brought together representatives from 193 UN member states alongside technology companies, civil society groups, and academic and technical institutions.

The initiative works to channel modern technology toward benefiting humanity by building skills, setting standards and forming partnerships worldwide.

On the sidelines of the dialogue, Ali bin Amer Al Shidhani, Undersecretary of Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Communications and Information Technology, held talks with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin.

The two discussed opportunities for cooperation and reviewed Oman’s ongoing efforts to modernise legislation and update policies to keep pace with rapid technology advances.

Oman also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting international efforts aimed at strengthening technology governance worldwide. The Sultanate expressed its readiness to team up with the UN and other global partners to make the most of these applications for communities everywhere.

This recognition puts Oman Lens among a handful of innovators making a real difference in global efforts through space technology.
